Brenda Gibson was born April 5, 1952 in Ravenna, Ohio - moving to California at age three. As far back as she can remember, she was always drawing, especially people. Her grandmother recognized her passion for art and provided her with a constant supply of paper and pencils. On her twelfth birthday, her grandmother bought Brenda her first paint by number oil painting kit. She was instantly seduced by the creamy texture and luminosity of oils.
After many years of exploring other mediums, including watercolors and china painting, she learned her passion truly lied in oils. Years after being a predominantly self taught painter, she reached a point of frustration. An artist friend, Helga Bateman, recommended she seek out a fine art academy that focused on "life" drawing and painting. After researching, she selected the acclaimed California Art Institute in Westlake Village, California. She dedicated herself to over two years of intensive study of the human form and the fundamentals of design, values, edges and light. She attributes much of her success to the passionate, talented artist and instructors such as Aaron Westerberg, Rick Morris, Michelle Dunaway, Ignot Ignotov, Ryan Wurmser and Jeremy Lipking. In addition, she mentored privately with the young accomplished artist Joseph Todorovich.
Continuing her studies and quest for further knowledge she is currently enrolled at the well-respected Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Arts. Inspired by the masters of the past which include Bouguereau, John Singer Sargent and JW Waterhouse to name a few.
As Gibson's abilities improved she developed a means of expressing her deepest feelings in oil paintings. "My greatest inspiration lies with the bond shared between a mother and child." Her goal is to capture on canvas the emotion she wishes the viewer to feel in their heart.
A lover of nature, Gibson lives in her own paradise, Lake Arrowhead, California, a picturesque community on the mountains of Southern California. "It's truly a luxury to live there and pursue my passion and there's not a day that goes by that I don't realize how fortunate I am!"
Among her many accomplishments, she was the grand prize winner at the 2005 American Artist Magazine competition in Pasadena, California. She was also a finalist in the 2006 Raynar Art Competition. A 2006 artist in the "Salon International" juried exhibition at Greenhouse Gallery of Fine Art in San Antonio, Texas. She is also recognized and accepted as a member of the Oil Painters of America and recently selected to exhibit two paintings in their Western Regional juried competition and show at the Lee Youngman Gallery of Fine Art in Calistoga, California, in October, 2006.
One of her most recent accomplishments was being recognized as one of the featured artists in the November 2006 issue of American Artist Magazine.
